How to Fix Stringy and Messy TPU 3D Prints

Question: Why is my TPU 3D print stringy and messy?

Answer: Stringy, messy prints with TPU often result from incorrect retraction settings, print temperature, or print speed. Start by lowering your printing temperature by 5–10°C; TPU typically prints well between 210°C and 230°C, but too hot causes excessive oozing. Next, reduce retraction distance and speed—try around 1–2 mm retraction at 20–30 mm/s, since TPU is flexible and can jam if retracted too aggressively. Print slower, around 15–25 mm/s, to give the filament time to deposit cleanly. Also, enable combing or avoid crossing perimeters to minimise stringing. Lastly, check your nozzle is clean and the filament dry, as moisture can worsen stringing. Adjust these settings incrementally and run test prints to find the best balance for your specific printer and TPU brand.
